No Vacation: Band Profile
Nostalgia and music go together like Mac and Cheese.
No Vacation, a band who's charming, indie mellowness hits home with kids who grew up on the music of The Killers, and Miike Snow, is leaving San Francisco, the town that raised them, for New York City. Their latest EP, titled Intermission, which came out in November of 2017, reflects transition, saying good bye to their hometown and the past, for a new future in Brooklyn. With life always bringing change, it's nice to have a little nostalgia to keep rooted into something.
The dream pop quartet, composed of Sabrina Mai, Marisa Saunders, Nat Lee, and Harrison Spencer formed in 2015 to produce the Summer Break Mixtape and their album Amo XO. No Vacation's alt-pop serenity takes me back to the worry-less summer of 11th grade and lazy days laying in bed with sunbeams cracking through the blinds. Listening to songs like August and Dræm Girl with my head back on the pillow, I'm in a dream of past affections and old friendships that have moved on. These songs revoke the romanticized past, a nice place to get away to from time to time.
The group went on hiatus in 2016, so that each member could pursue individual projects. Sabrina Mai produced a number of singles for Afternoon Anorak, bringing ethereal vocals to tracks like Adieu and i hate every1 but you. Nat Lee adopted the name Yekeno and her synth-pop talent explored new styles with songs like I Never Thought and Robolution,
After reuniting in 2017, the band created Intermission- a transitional EP about moving on. The group has been through its own intermission, but is back, only located in New York this time. The gentle guitar and ambiance of songs like Yam Yam and Mind Fields once again induce dreamy memories, but explore the idea of change. Ultimately, while reminiscing in good time is fine, things never stay the same. No Vacation is all about returning to the past while leaving room to grow and try new things. Music and nostalgia may go together like Mac and Cheese, but there can be a dozen ways to change and enjoy a comforting classic.
The band is on tour throughout March, 2018 and will be attending the SXSW music festival in Austin, TX, held between March 12th and 18th.
